“We’re working together. Neither of us has time for fooling around.”

“You practice that one in the mirror?” Harper asked her as she helped Charlotte carry several plates out to the back porch.

Although the summery day had turned colder as the sun set, Zack and Hadley had set up big propane heaters on the long porch that ran the length of the kitchen and living room. Between the heat and the pretty white lights strung over the space, they were more than comfortable eating outside.

“I don’t need to practice anything.”

Charlotte kept her focus on navigating through the house with eight pounds of barbecue on a serving platter and not on her friend. It also kept her from considering if her nose was actually growing as she confessed to Harper some of what had happened earlier.

“You keep telling yourself that.”

Charlotte settled the platter on the table Hadley had designated for serving, and Harper added plates on one side and rolls on the other.

“I don’t have to tell myself anything. We’ve fooled around a bit, and it’s not going anywhere, Harper. What am I supposed to do? Attack the man?”

Her friend’s face fell at that. “Oh, Char, I’m sorry. I mean, I just thought—” Harper glanced toward the house, satisfied no one was coming, before leaning in closer. “He’s really not interested?”

“Interest doesn’t seem to be our problem.”

Confusion stamped itself in her friend’s pretty hazel eyes. “What is your problem?”

“A loving family who raised me and runs one of the most successful ranches in the entire state versus a motherless child whose father was a royal shit. In a nutshell.”

“That’s just dumb. And—” Harper stilled. “And more proof that relationships between fathers and sons, especially the bad ones, can do a significant amount of damage.”

Harper had lived with that damage herself. Gray’s deeply troubled relationship with his own father had been the catalyst to break up with Harper when they were young, which had been the further driving force to send her to Seattle.

What would have happened if she hadn’t come back to Rustlers Creek earlier this year?

Would Harper and Gray still be struggling along, separate and alone?

Was this really all about timing, like she’d thought? Or did it go far deeper, the effects of his father’s abuse too damaging to really recover from?

“Let me ask you a question,” Harper said.

Since she and Harper were still alone on the porch, Charlotte nodded. She’d opened the door on this, and to be honest, it felt good to talk to her friend. Even if the mixture of amusement and subtle teasing was a bit more than she’d bargained for. “Okay.”

“If the two of you stayed friends, if you got through the planning of the ball, and he got his ranch up and running, and you kept this really great friendship you have, despite the fact that you both do your level best to screw it up as often as possible—”

“We don’t do that.” She didn’t even need Harper’s side-eye to give in. “Okay, yes, we do that.
